Before the first Ice Age, about a million years ago, the land surface consisted of Pfoh sand and clay marl. Among geological experts, the ground and terminal moraines that once swept across our municipal area are no longer attributed to the Riss Glacial Period but to the Mündel Glacial Period.

In the eastern part of the municipal area, this Mündel Ice Age ground and terminal moraine overrode the approximately 5-meter-thick Günz cover gravel lying above the Tertiary Pfoh sand, thereby also forming a thick moraine landscape of reworked rocks ranging from the finest sand grains to the coarsest boulders.

The former municipal quarry near Stockland on the eastern slope of the Dürnach Valley provides insight into the geological processes of these prehistoric times. Since it has not been in operation for 40 years, the lower layers are now covered by masses of debris. Gravel extraction had to be abandoned at the time due to the emergence of Nagelfluh rock blocks.
